Warkworth Earth Satellite communciations station opened July 1971.

Warkworth was chosen for the site because the land foundation was strong enough to take the immense weight of the antenna and pedestal, it was sheltered from excessive wind speeds, free from electrical noises of microwave frequencies, was within 100 miles of Auckland where the international toll exchange is situated and had to be close to a suitable town to accommodate employees and their families.
